UI GreenMetric Visits the Ministry of Home Affairs to Discuss Sustainable City Rankings Development

Jakarta, 21 May 2026 – Representatives from UI GreenMetric paid an official visit to the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemendagri) to discuss the strategic development of the UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings framework and questionnaire system. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to strengthening sustainable governance and advancing environmental assessment mechanisms for cities and regencies across Indonesia.

Representing the Ministry of Home Affairs was Dr. Heriyadi Roni, M.Si., Director of Regional Performance Evaluation & Capacity Building under the Directorate General of Regional Autonomy. He met with the UI GreenMetric delegation, led by Chairperson Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., alongside Dr. Rahmi, S.Hum., M.Sc., Manager of Operations, Data, and Service Development; Sabrina Hikmah Ramadianti, S.Si. Manager of Program, Partnerships & Communications; and Dr. Jauzak Hussaini W., S.Kom., M.T., Data & Research Coordinator;.

During the session, both parties addressed the ongoing transformation of UI GreenCityMetric into the comprehensive UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings framework. The transition highlights a critical paradigm shift: moving beyond the conventional "green city" concept toward a broader "sustainable city" approach that integrates climate resilience, environmental governance, accessibility, infrastructure, and long-term regional development.

The dialogue also reviewed several methodological enhancements currently being developed for the upcoming cycles. Based on the 2025 guidelines, the framework aggregates a total score of 10,000 points across six core categories: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste Management, Water Management, Transportation and Mobility, and Governance.

In line with the strategic review from the recent UI GreenMetric Sustainable City Rankings 2026 reviewer workshop, the team is exploring nuanced adjustments. A key priority is the formulation of distinct regional typologies to differentiate metropolitan cities, rural regencies, coastal zones, tourism hubs, and mountainous regions. This ensures that local governments are evaluated fairly, accounting for their specific geographical characteristics and institutional capacities.

Furthermore, updates are being made to strengthen indicators surrounding accessibility, flood mitigation, groundwater protection, and digital governance. To ensure data integrity, the methodology is transitioning toward a more spatial and evidence-based approach, incorporating Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, OpenStreetMap (OSM), visual validation, and public environmental information systems.

Another milestone discussed was the integration of data streams between UI GreenMetric and the Directorate General of Regional Autonomy. UI GreenMetric expressed a keen interest in utilizing official city and regency performance data managed by the Directorate General. This synergy is expected to reinforce data lineage, streamline verification processes, and assist local bureaucracies in synthesizing cross-sectoral sustainability metrics.

This institutional bridge directly aligns with recommendations from the 2026 reviewer workshop, which emphasized that close collaboration with national bodies like Kemendagri and Bappenas is vital to anchoring the legitimacy, usability, and policy relevance of the rankings.

By refining its methodology and deepening state-level collaborations, UI GreenMetric aims to empower Indonesian local governments to execute measurable, inclusive, and enduring survival strategies. This collective effort is designed to guide regions beyond mere performance benchmarking, anchoring true resilience and quality of life toward Indonesia’s 2030 sustainable development targets and beyond.
