Wuhan University, Durham University inaugurate joint institute

The inauguration ceremony for the Wuhan University Durham University Joint Institute was held on Monday at the History Museum of Wuhan University. The institute is Wuhan University's first Sino-foreign cooperative education institution established as a non-independent legal entity. Its establishment also marks a milestone in Wuhan University's efforts to advance the internationalization of education and build a high-quality platform for Sino-foreign cooperative education.

On Monday morning, Professor Zhang Pingwen, president of Wuhan University, met with Professor Karen O'Brien, vice-chancellor and warden of Durham University, to discuss the development of the joint institute. Zhang noted that over the past year, colleagues from both universities have worked closely to lay a foundation for the establishment of the institute. O'Brien stated that Durham University will work closely with Wuhan University to ensure that all initiatives are implemented so that the partnership can benefit more faculty members and students at both universities.

That afternoon, the inauguration ceremony, presided over by Yuan Yufeng, vice-president of Wuhan University, was held at the university's History Museum, located in the Yingding Old Library of Wuhan University. Officials from both universities, representatives from joint education institutions of several leading Chinese universities, delegates from selected high schools, and faculty and student representatives attended the ceremony.

During the event, representatives from the two universities unveiled the plaque for the joint institute and signed a cooperation agreement on seedcorn funds to support future academic collaboration.

The ceremony was followed by a forum on the high-quality development of international joint education programs, where participants shared experiences and explored new models for global cooperation in higher education.

Talent development

According to Zhu Kongjun, secretary of the Party committee at Wuhan University, the establishment of the Wuhan University Durham University Joint Institute aims to implement the national strategy of opening up its education sector and contribute to China's goal of becoming a leading education powerhouse. The joint institute will cultivate high-quality talent with a sense of national pride, an innovative spirit and a global perspective.

The institute was officially approved by the Ministry of Education on Dec 31 2025, and plans to begin admissions in 2026. It will offer six undergraduate programs: geophysics; geoscience; intelligent water resources engineering; mechanical design, manufacturing and automation; electronic information engineering; and electrical engineering and automation. The institute will enroll a total of 350 students through the Chinese college entrance examination in its inaugural year. Students will complete all four years of full-time study at Wuhan University. Courses will be taught in both Chinese and English, and more than one-third will be taught by lecturers and professors from Durham University. Students will receive degrees from both Wuhan University and Durham University upon graduation.

Zhang emphasized that the university strongly encourages students to participate in overseas study programs during their time at the institute. In 2025, the two universities signed a student exchange agreement. Students may apply to study at Durham University based on their preferences, and Wuhan University will provide credit transfer and scholarship support.

"The dual educational background in China and the United Kingdom equips students with both a solid professional foundation and outstanding cross-cultural communication skills. In the job market, whether they join multinational corporations, international organizations, or large domestic enterprises, they will possess a distinguished competitive advantage. " he said.

Bridging nations

Founded in 1893, Wuhan University is located in Wuchang district, Wuhan, Hubei province, with its main campus situated on the picturesque Luojia Mountain. It is one of China's leading comprehensive universities and a member of the country's "Project 985" and "Project 211" initiatives. In 1999, the journal Science named it one of China's most outstanding universities.

Durham University is one of the oldest universities in the UK and also a member of the Russell Group, a consortium of the UK's leading research-intensive universities. It operates a distinctive collegiate system, and parts of its collegiate campus are located in historic buildings such as Durham Castle.

O'Brien stated that Durham University and Wuhan University are two distinguished universities with fundamental strengths and a shared belief in collaboration. She believes that Chinese is a language British students need to learn and expressed hope that more British students will come to China to study in the future.

Dominic McAllister, consul general at the British Consulate-General Wuhan, said the UK prime minister's visit to China in January underscores the UK's intent to deepen practical and secure cooperation with China. "The UK is deeply committed to partnerships in higher education and innovation, and China is one of our strategic partners globally. " he said.
