The University of Sydney International Stipend Scholarship is a competitive postgraduate research award aimed at exceptional international students who wish to pursue a higher degree by research—either a master’s by research or a Ph.D.—at the University of Sydney, in Australia.
The scholarship provides a living allowance and tuition support, designed to ease the financial burden of full-time research study. The living stipend is set at $41,753 (Australian dollars) per annum for 2025, with annual indexation applied on 1 January.
Applicants must either be currently enrolled in a research programme or hold an unconditional offer to study a master’s by research or Ph.D. at the University of Sydney.
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and research potential, and aligns with the university’s broader commitment to research excellence and global talent development.
Deadline
September or December of the preceding year, depending on the research period.
Duration
- Up to 3.5 years (14 research periods) for Ph.D. candidates
- Up to 1.75 years (7 research periods) for master’s by research students
Benefits
- Living stipend of AUD $41,753 annually (2025 rate; indexed yearly)
- Full tuition fee coverage
- A relocation allowance for eligible expenses, for students who meet certain conditions.
- Reimbursement of up to $420 for master’s candidates and up to $840 for doctoral candidates for direct costs of producing a thesis.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be an international student, either newly commencing or currently enrolled
- Hold an unconditional offer of admission or be enrolled in a master’s by research or Ph.D. programme at the University of Sydney
- Demonstrate an excellent academic record and clear research potential
